Safe vs Fake SIM Database Sites – How to Spot Scams in Pakistan
Not all SIM lookup sites are created equal. Here is how to tell the difference and protect yourself.
SIM database websites have exploded in popularity in Pakistan. Unfortunately, so have fake sites designed to steal your personal information. PTA and NCCIA have blocked over 1,400 such platforms, but new ones appear every day. This guide helps you distinguish between legitimate tools and dangerous scams.
Red Flags: How to Spot a Fake SIM Database Site
Requires APK Download
Legitimate SIM lookups work in your browser. If a site asks you to download an APK file, it is likely malware. PKCERT confirmed that Raccoon and RedLine malware are commonly distributed through SIM checker APKs.
Asks for Your CNIC to Check Someone Else
Legitimate tools let you enter a phone number to get owner details. If a site asks for YOUR CNIC to check another person's number, it is harvesting your identity.
Promises Live Location Tracking
No public SIM database can track a phone's live location. This capability is only available to law enforcement through documented PTA requests. Sites claiming 'live tracker' are lying.
Claims 'PTA Certified' or 'Official'
PTA does not certify third-party SIM lookup websites. If a site claims to be PTA-certified, that is a lie. Only cnic.pta.gov.pk and the 668/667 SMS services are official.
Requests Payment for Results
PTA's official SIM check services are free. Sites that demand payment for SIM lookups are either scams or reselling publicly available information.
No Privacy Policy or Contact Info
Legitimate websites have clear privacy policies and contact information. Fake sites often have no About page, no contact details, and no terms of service.
Green Flags: Signs of a Safe SIM Database Site
Works in Browser, No Download Needed
Safe sites work entirely in your web browser. No APK, no app install, no plugin required.
Clear Privacy Policy
The site explains what data it collects, how it is used, and whether it is stored. Our policy: we do not store any lookup results.
References Official PTA Methods
Safe sites complement their tools with references to PTA's official channels like *668#, 667, and cnic.pta.gov.pk.
HTTPS and Secure Connection
Legitimate sites use HTTPS (the padlock icon in your browser). Fake sites often run on HTTP without encryption.
Transparent About Limitations
Safe sites honestly state what their tool can and cannot do. They do not promise live tracking or guaranteed results for every number.
Contact Information Available
A legitimate site provides a way to contact the owner or support team with questions or concerns.
